Ants
Wherever you are in Australia, you will have seen this little creature in your garden or even in your house (or honey jar). Ants live all over Australia in every single kind of environment. That is because there are so many ants - over 1,200 known species in Australia and over 15,000 worldwide. Many ants love rainforest areas, but ants are also found in the aridest deserts and even underwater.
Blue Ants
Have you ever noticed a really, really big ant? Should you ever spotted a blue one? Or one that holds its bum in the air while it walks? It is most likely a Blue Ant. The Blue Ant grows up to 2.5 cm long but there is a secret to its massive growth... it's actually a wasp. They live in Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. The male Blue Ant has a darker body with white spots on his abdomen.
Bogong Moths
As the climate warms up in south-east Australia, the well-known Bogong moths are making ready to make a big adventure. Bogong moths migrate several hundred kilometers each year. During spring, they fly from the valley grassy areas up to the mountainous caves in the Snowy Mountains.
Butterflies
Butterflies are a welcome addition to any garden and like many native buddies, need our help to make sure they remain regular guests. Butterflies are cold-blooded and need plenty of warm sunshine. You may see them in early spring with wings wide open to the warming sun. Or you may see them just touch the top of a bird bath or pond. Purple, red, orange, and yellow flowers attract butterflies.
Ichneumon Wasps
As the days get hotter, brilliant Ichneumon Wasps become a typical sight in numerous Aussie terraces, floating over your grass on a warm day or attempting to mate with your orchids. There are around 2000 species living all over Australia. These stingless bugs are Mother Nature's vermin control for your garden and give intriguing amusement to those pre-arranged to stand by and watch the show.
Ladybirds
Ladybirds are incredible to have as pals on your patio. In numerous societies, they are considered fortunate to such an extent that killing one will bring pity and mishap. There are around 6000 types of a ladybird on the planet, with around 500 species in Australia. You may know ladybirds as ladybugs or lady beetles, yet whatever name you use, they are phenomenal at keeping your nursery solid.
